Before arriving at Muhlenberg, I heard a lot of people say, “there’s nothing to do in Allentown”. Well, a lot of people were wrong! I have loved Perky Foodie-ing around this city. Allentown actually has a ton of really great restaurants to try, and more and more cool places seem to be popping up every time I visit! I have now been to a bunch of really amazing and unique restaurants in the area and I’m very excited to share them all with you!
One of my favorite Allentown food finds is Billy’s Downtown Diner. This is not the laid-back Jersey diner I’m used to at home. It’s a restaurant that makes some incredibly delicious upscale twists on your favorite diner classics. I have been to this place a few times already since coming to Muhlenberg, and I have a feeling it’s going to be my new regular.
You know how much I love a good brunch. Brunch is bae. For real, people. And it’s especially good at Billy’s! Look at all the yummy things I have eaten there! I can hear your “ooh”s and “ahh”s from here.
Coconut Stuffed French Toast: French baguette slices stuffed with a decadent coconut cream cheese mixture and encrusted with more coconut flakes and grilled, drizzled with a brown sugar strawberry glaze, dusted with powdered sugar, and topped with whipped cream. It’s like the most wonderful coconut cream pie you’ve ever had… but French toast, so even better.
“Vegan”esque Omelette: Okay, I don’t really get the “vegan” thing… I guess because there are many vegetables involved? Sure! Whatever– it’s good, I don’t care. But this omelette is filled with filled with fresh spinach, broccoli, and PESTO (because pesto just makes everything better). And it’s topped with yummy sun-dried tomatoes and goat cheese!
Peppermint Mocha Cappuccino: Self-explanatory. And oh so pretty. I’m loving the nice sunny weather, but I’d time travel back to winter any day to have this cappuccino again!
South Side Grits: Grits for breakfast. Yup. Definitely as wonderful as it sounds! Homestyle buttery grits topped with two perfectly runny and delectable eggs over easy, crispy browned homefries, and super creamy goat cheese and sprinkled with fresh scallions. SO BEAUTIFUL.
Berry Krunch French Toast: More wonderful French toast! This one is made from those lovely pieces of baguette and topped with crunchy (*Krunchy?) granola, fresh slices of strawberry and dried cranberries, whipped cream, and powdered sugar and drizzled with sweet brown sugar glaze. I love the texture of the granola on top! It makes this French toast totally delicious and unique!
I do a lot of brunching here in Jersey, but Allentown’s Billy’s is definitely a competitor with some of my hometown faves. If you go to ‘Berg or happen to find yourself in Allentown, you totally must try this place and brunch your way to happiness!
P.S. Sorry for the long pause! One reason for my pause is that I’ve been spending a lot of my Perky Foodie writing time to write for Odyssey Online! If you like the way I write and all that, go check it out @ https://www.theodysseyonline.com/@rachelbrudner! Other than that, ya know, it’s been school, life, the usual… but now it is SUMMER! Which means that I now have much more time to Perky Foodie my way through life, woohooo! (Yes, to Perky Foodie is a verb now– don’t judge).
